User Activity: Comparisons Of Social Networking Sites
Thanks to Jeff Bulas for bringing this infographic from Go Gulf to our attention (Jeff's blog is here)...
This infographic is extremely interesting. It breaks down the 5 main social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and Pinterest between:
- Number of users
- Number of visitors
- Gender
- Time spent per month
- Age demographics
- Estimated User Worth
Have a look:
Some interesting observations:
- Facebook, Google+ and Linkedin are predominantly male-centric
- Facebook's monthly visitors shows a much larger chasm between them and the other platforms than just user numbers (7012.9m monthly visitors, compared to 182m on Twitter). This shows a high level of commitment from its huge user-base.
- Facebook and Pinterest by far have the highest average time spent per month, dwarfing Twitter, Google+ and Linkedin by some margin. Users are more inclined to spend hours looking through photos on Facebook and Pinterest, than spend hours reading twitter updates or viewing professional contacts details.
- Twitter, Linkedin and Pinterest have a slightly higher age demographic user base. More mature platforms and users?
- 63% of Facebook users are under 34. Is Facebook more for 'the kids' and are the other platforms more mature friendly?
- 64% of Pinterest users are over 35. Why aren't younger people using Pinterest as much? Is it because their is limited 'social' interaction per se? Or are the younger generation less interested in spending hours and hours essentially filing images into categories?
- 83% of Twitter users are over 26. Should Twitter be targeting the under 26's to rapidly expand their user base?
Which platform do you use the most? Would love to hear your thoughts on these observations and statistics!

Can Facebook Keep Up The Momentum?
Its a big question at the moment, whether Facebook (FB) can keep growing or even remain as big as it is, especially following recent conversations about the IPO.
The main question on everyone's lips is how can FB monetise their mobile app and make money from advertising via this route?
Mobile and 'Augmented Reality' (AR) are seemingly the next step in digital technology. We've had digital revolution with the rise of the internet (AOL, Yahoo, Google - the former 2 of which are shadows of themselves 10-12 years ago), we're experiencing social at present (Facebook being King, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google is trying to push into this space with Google+) and the mobile era is now upon us with everyone using mobile devices, phones, tablets to access the internet and social media. Can Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn really tap this market? BIG question and only time will tell.
The company themselves recently stated in a regulatory filing that the growing number of mobile users using Facebook is hard to monetize and "may negatively affect our revenue and financial results."

Facebook have the advantage that they have been buying up a lot of startups, predominantly mobile startups (Instagram, Karma) and more importantly, integrating the talent from these startups into their company, so they are in a strong position. They also have a LOT of valuable data (more than Google have) regarding users gender, age, location, even what they like (Google don't have this, hence the creation of Google+), data that is valuable to advertisers: but HOW can they advertise on mobile? They're talking about promoted updates so companies can pay to appear on the feed of someone who hasn't 'liked' their page... but will this work?
This is the big headache for investors at the moment, if you look at the share price following the IPO then it's clear that either the valuation was too high (almost certainly) and/or investors really don't believe FB can actually make money through it's mobile operations.
Eric Jackson, founder of Ironfire Capital recently said: "In five to eight years they are going to disappear in the way that Yahoo has disappeared," Jackson said. "Yahoo is still making money, it's still profitable, still has 13,000 employees working for it, but it's 10 percent of the value that it was at the height of 2000. For all intents and purposes, it's disappeared."
Ultimately and additionally, people might get bored of FB and stop using it. In some countries, such as the US and Canada, people are becoming apathetic and deleting their accounts, so FB are targeting emerging markets like Brazil. Even if they do manage to monetise the mobile apps, if people simply stop using FB advertisers will abandon it, revenues will dry up and the company will shrink...
As with any company in such a strong position, FB will face a lot of problems over the next 5 to 10 years trying to maintain their position. Only time will tell if they can manage it, but it'll be fun finding out!

Turn On The Light
One of the main mistakes made by startups and companies in general is their marketing budget.
Social media, e-mail marketing and publicity are always referred to as low-cost ways to promote your business, which they are. However personally I describe them as cost effective. Additionally I point out the ability to better track your ROI which is of course paramount. Why spend money on advertising if you have no way to track your results. This can of course we done with all forms of marketing but with social media and digital methods it is much easier to keep track of the trail.
Many business owners think they can launch on a shoestring and they often run into trouble.
"The only way you can turn on the light and let people know you're there is by marketing and advertising, or you're going to have no customers"
-Strauss
While some say the rule of thumb for establishing a marketing budget is 5 percent of projected annual revenue, Strauss says each business has to tailor its marketing budget to its own needs. A regional business may have more limited marketing avenues than a business that is launching nationally or internationally, for example.

Pinterest recommendations really do drive sales!
According to research from BlogHer, Pinterest influences roughly 50% more active female users of its userbase to make a purchase compared to Facebook or Twitter. It’s easy to over-state the importance of this though: small sites tend to have a more committed userbase who buy in to the value of the site.
Although this clearly demonstrates the power of interest if used correctly it also shows how important social PR is. This is the act of having an agency correctly place your products on well respected and influential blogs. Get in touch if you would like to know more about how we can leverage these platforms to help you market your products more effectively.
